The Circulation of Anti-Gender Extremist Narratives

Location: Meeting room (1 & 2) at the Maison SHS Annie Ernaux. CY Cergy Paris Université.

Workshop coordinated by Claudia JARENO GILA from AGORA research center.

This workshop, organized at CY Cergy Paris Université within the framework of the European ARENAS project, focuses on the circulation of extremist narratives through a gendered lens. It combines plenary lectures, postdoctoral presentations, and roundtable discussions, integrating both established research and ongoing studies.
The workshop is structured in two parts: the first on the circulation of extremist narratives, the second on the actors and modalities of their mobilization. It also features doctoral and postdoctoral presentations alongside two roundtables.
The workshop will open with a keynote lecture by Éric Fassin, Professor of Sociology at the University of Paris 8, widely recognized as a leading authority in gender studies in France. Morning sessions will address transphobia and anti-woke discourse, humor and gender representation, and the manosphere and online dissemination of masculinist discourses. Afternoon sessions will focus on dissemination actors, including far-right feminism and international anti-gender networks.
Several members of the AGORA laboratory will moderate and participate in the roundtables, fostering dialogue between the ARENAS project and the Cergy academic community. The event is primarily aimed at researchers, doctoral candidates, and master’s students.
The following day, selected participants will also lead a masterclass within the Master “Political Ideas in a Digital Age” (PIDA), addressing disinformation, conspiracy theories, fake news, and social media use. This masterclass will also provide an opportunity to familiarize students with research initiation and to offer exposure to international issues, in line with the master’s program’s orientation towards global perspectives.
