Édouard Laboulaye (1811-1883) played a significant role in French intellectual, scientific, legal, and political life in the 19th century. In addition to the intellectual biography devoted to him by André Dauteribes in 1989, two conferences have been dedicated to him more recently: the first, at the Collège de France, on the bicentenary of his birth (Revue internationale de droit comparé, 63/3, 2011); the second at the University of Cergy-Pontoise in December 2016 on his legal and political thought (Revue française d'Histoire des idées politiques, 2018/1). However, many aspects of his work are worth revisiting, from his education to his private correspondence, his multiple networks, and his intellectual and political influence on the liberal sphere.
This is the focus of the International Congress on Laboulaye and the Liberal Milieus on October 20, 2025, at the Senate. The congress will be organized around three themes:
  • Laboulaye's scholarly works and their propagation
  • Laboulaye's intellectual networks and academic impact
  • His role and influence in the political arena
