Expressing and experiencing ethnicity among minority groups in the United States

Location: Laiden, The Netherlands

Attendance coordinated by Marie Pierre Arrizabalaga from AGORA research center.

The purpose of this session is to discuss the issue of ethnicity and identity among minority groups in the United States using Jewish, Russian-speaking, African-American, and Native American groups as case studies. Depending on circumstances, minority groups and/or ethnic groups in the United States have to converge their original culture within the main-stream American culture and adapt to fit within America. In the process they develop a hybrid identity and culture which merge original and American aspects. Using the intersectional approach, the participants to the session address the issues of ethnicity and identity taking into account gender, race, religion, and class to show how minority and ethnic men and women adapt their culture and identity to multicultural America, and overcome their differences, inequalities, and/or discrimination to best integrate the society.
