Crossed perspectives on coreference: linguistics, natural language processing and information and communication sciences

Location: Maison de la recherche SHS Annie Ernaux

International meeting coordinated by Marine Delabord from LT2D research center.

Referential expressions designating the same referent are linked by a coreference relationship and form a reference chain. This phenomenon is the subject of research in linguistics from the syntactic, semantic and discourse points of view. Work on coreference is also being done in language acquisition, didactics, psycholinguistics, natural language processing (NLP) and literature studies. Although the theoretical frameworks and methods of analysis differ from one discipline to another, an interdisciplinary dialogue could lead to a reciprocal enrichment of approaches. The aim of this study day is to provide a structured discussion around three thematic sessions: (1) the linguistic characterisation of chains and their links, (2) corpus coreference and automatic detection in NLP, and (3) the study of chains in context. In addition to representing a diversity of approaches and points of view, the work presented will provide opportunity for reflection about the cross-adaptation of tools and methods for the study of coreference in linguistics and NLP, with a view to their reuse in information and communication sciences.

This event is supported by CY Advanced Studies and the Agence Nationale de la Recherche, as part of the funding for the Junior Professorship in ‘Digital Resources in Social and Human Sciences’ held by Marine Delaborde.
