Legal Advisers in Foreign affairs : a comparative perspective (1789-1939)
Raphaël Cahen is a senior researcher (JLU Giessen) as well as a Guest Lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE). He is currently Associate Fellow at CY AS, invited by CPJP laboratory.
In this Lecture, I will address the story of Legal Advisers employed in Foreign Offices across the 19th and the 20th century. Although a strong Focus will be made on the French Case (which was rather avant gardiste on the matter), I will drew comparison with other European and non-European countries in a comparative and global perspectives.
I will provide a prosopography and socio-cultural history of this Office.
