Inter- and Intra-Firm Games

Dongsoo Shin is professor of economics at Santa Clara University in California, USA. He is currently Fellow-in-Residence at CY AS, invited by ESSEC and THEMA Laboratory.

The lecture will introduce a basic concept of game theory and present how it is applied in economic research. The presentation will be divided in two parts. The first part will discuss Inter-firm Games (firms competing with each other within an industry). The second part will discuss Intra-firm Games (incentivizing the individuals and subdivisions within a firm). In both parts of presentation, Professor Shin will discuss some of his past and present research projects as the illustrating examples. For example, questions such as the follows will be answered in the lecture:

  • Why firms with lower quality products voluntarily disclose their product quality to be rated as 1- or 2-stars?
  • Why marketing and sales department (likewise, development and production department) are integrated sometimes and separated other times?
  • Why seemingly inefficient bureaucratic organizational structures are so hard to get rid of (or are they good)?

Date: 3 October 2023 from 14:00 to 15:30

The hybrid guest lecture is organised in person at the H008 meeting room of MIR in Neuville-sur-Oise and remotely on Zoom.
