Magnetism: simple models and complex problems
Daniel Ueltschi is professor of mathematics at the University of Warwick.
The description of the magnetic properties of condensed matter systems is a fascinating challenge. There are many, many particles, they interact, and their collective behaviour show phase transitions.Physicists have introduced very simplified descriptions, such as the Ising model. Its study has been and continues to be an epic adventure in physics and mathematics. I will explain some of the questions and some of the results, notably the famous exact solution of Onsager for two dimensions.
Date: 14 November 2023 from 14:00 to 15:30
The hybrid guest lecture is organised in person at the H008 meeting room of MIR in Neuville-sur-Oise and remotely on Zoom.
