Time Liquid Crystals
Ananyo Maitra is fellow TALENT at Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modélisation (LPTM), CY Cergy Paris Université.
In the first part of the talk, I will introduce the physics of active systems -- the statistical mechanics of "particles" that convert a sustained energy supply to work. This theoretical framework allows physicists to explore the collective behaviour of systems as diverse as the intracellular medium, tissues, bacterial fluids, and herds, schools and human crowds from the perspective of phase transitions and symmetry breaking. I will then show that such living condensed matter can form ordered states with no equivalent in dead, i.e., equilibrium, condensed matter, such as aligned phases in which the direction of alignment spontaneously rotates in time. I will discuss the emergent laws governing such "time liquid crystals", and their possible implications for materials science and biology.
Date : 24 May 2022 from 12:30 to 14:00
The hybrid guest lecture is organised in person at the Auditorium of MIR in Neuville-sur-Oise and remotely on Zoom.
