5th International Conference « Political Violences in the 20th century

Venue: Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris

International conference coordinated by David Copello, CY AGORA laboratory.

This conference aims at fostering the development of the International Network on Political Violence (INPV), a research network devoted to the dynamics of political violence in the 20th century, in Latin America and Europe. While continuing the efforts made in previous editions to decompartmentalize national approaches, it also aims to reinforce the multidisciplinary dimension of INPV's work. It will offer a new platform for dialogue between historians from the different geographical areas covered during previous events, while broadening the discussions 1) to other social sciences, notably political science, sociology and anthropology; 2) to other geographical areas that have experienced comparable processes of political violence during the 20th and early 21st centuries (Western and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean basin, Asia). The study of processes of political violence (military dictatorships, mass repression) and post-crisis situations (institutional transitions, transitional justice) in the Ibero-American zone will thus be enriched by the most recent approaches to war violence and genocide in Europe and Asia, violence in colonial contexts and radical Islamist mobilizations in Europe and the Orient.
