Telling Science, Drawing Science - TSDS#3

Venue: La Cité Internationale de la BD et de l’image, Angoulême

International conference, coordinated by Cécile de Hosson, CY LDAR

Science is told, science is drawn, science is staged. It invests the cultural public spaces (theaters, children's albums, graphic novels, comics) and moves out of its usual media of expression (research articles, symposiums, magazines and specialized works). Between maintaining the integrity of the knowledge to be made known and understood, respecting the rules and constraints intrinsic to the chosen media or artistic form (narrative and graphic codes) and taking into account the interests of the target audience, the processes of creating and using stories and images that speak of science "differently" are the result of skilful tricks, compromises, and sometimes renouncement; so many choices left in the shadows of creation and yet deserving to be known, shared, and discussed. This is the aim of the TSDS international conference, which since 2016 has brought together more than 100 participants (researchers, authors, teachers, scientific mediators) at the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image d'Angoulême, driven by a common desire to shed light on the following questions: How is knowledge transposed into popularization media? Which graphic and narrative choices? For which intentions? With what constraints? And for what effects, especially on learning?
