CUT-UPS@2023

Venue: University of Chicago, Paris

International conference coordinated by Peggy Pacini, UMR CY Héritages.

63 years after William S. Burroughs et Brion Gysin theorized the cut-up, the international conference Cut-ups@2023 will be the occasion to assess its impacts, influences and resonances in time in different fields of research — literature, cinema, music, science, the arts, publishing, translation and gender and LGBTQ studies. Creative and critical, the conference will approach the practice through different perspectives: historiography, to weigh in the cut-up heritage, its transformation and transposition; linguistics and translation studies, to explore the challenges, the possibilities, and impasses of the genre; epistemology, to embrace Burroughs and Gysin’s literary and artistic program and gauge the transgenerational intercultural flows the cut-up generated and dragged. The conference will host three keynote speakers (Jordan Abel, Dodie Bellamy et Klaus Maeck), fifty or so papers, and will challenge the creative and subversive dimensions of the genre through several workshops, readings and performances.
