Guest Lecture: Paulo Nuno Vicente

The Emergence of Artificial Intelligence in the Humanities and Social Sciences: From the Scarcity of the Object of Study to the Renewal of Research Agendas

Paulo Nuni Vicente is Professor at the department of communication science at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal. He is invited by LT2D laboratory.

This conference examines the increasing significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the humanities and social sciences, focusing on its historical representations, current perceptions, and the impact on research agendas. It explores the concept of artificial life, tracing mythological and narrative depictions of artificial beings across European history, from classical to modern times. The discussion extends to the role of sociotechnical imaginaries, which have gained prominence in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, shaping societal perceptions of AI and influencing its integration into various social structures. Additionally, the conference addresses how AI has evolved as an object of study within the social sciences, particularly in the field of Communication, where research approaches, terminology, and focal points have shifted over the past two decades. Finally, it reflects on future perspectives for renewing research agendas, advocating for a multi- and interdisciplinary approach in both research and teaching, while emphasizing the importance of critical engagement with AI for the future of the field.
