Agent-based modelling of opinion dynamics

Arkadiusz Jędrzejewski is EUTOPIA-SIF COFUND Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at CY Cergy Paris Université, Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and Modelling.

Many social phenomena like opinion dynamics, norm formation, or political polarization are collective processes, which arise from repeated interactions between multiple individuals. One tool to study such processes is agent-based modelling. Agent-based models are computer simulations in which we implement how individuals called agents interact with each other and the environment. These interactions very often lead to unexpected or even counter-intuitive large-scale outcomes, which cannot be easily deduced from the behavior of individual agents.

In my talk, I will explain basic concepts behind agent-based modelling. Based on the simple model of opinion dynamics, I will demonstrate how we can use agent-based models and statistical physics to study social systems. Finally, I will discuss questions and problems raised within the models of opinion formation.

Date: 7 March 2023 from 12:30 to 14:00
