Using and Analysing Images to Investigate Childhood and Youth

Venue: Université Paris Nanterre, Nanterre

International workshop coordinated by Philippe Bongrand, CY EMA laboratory

The sociology of childhood aims to avoid an adult-centric and paternalistic approach to research. In order to gather children and youngsters points of view, visual methods appear to be a relevant tool (Gonzalez & Ruiz-Casares, 2022).
The aim of this workshop is to take stock of these academic uses. Drawing from published papers as well as research in progress, it brings together scholars, visual artists and graduate students to discuss several dimensions introduced by the use of images (photos, videos) in surveys: i) the possibilities offered by images as a support for young people's discourse; ii) the image produced by young people as empirical data in itself; iii) young people's relationship with images, in particular the way in which they control the image of themselves that is shared during the survey.
