What is normative economics?
Marcus Pivato est Professeur d'Économie à l'UFR Économie-Gestion de CY Cergy Paris Université, et membre du laboratoire THEMA
I will provide a brief introduction to the three branches of normative economics, namely, social choice theory, decision theory, and social welfare theory. Social choice theory studies voting rules and other methods for making democratic collective decisions. Social welfare theory develops barometers for evaluating the outcomes of such decisions in terms of criteria like fairness or total well-being. Finally, decision theory studies how to make rational decisions when confronted with complexities such as uncertainty. These branches interact closely with one another, and combine concepts and methods from mathematics, economics, philosophy, political theory, and theoretical computer science.
