Julian Hernández: The Rise of Mexican Queer Cinema
Location: MR SHS Cergy and Casa de Mexico
International meeting coordinated by Geoffroy Huard from Heritages research center
This conference aims to introduce French audiences to the work of Julián Hernández, from his early short films of the 1990s—when he was still a student at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC)—to his most recent feature film, Los demonios del amanecer (2024). It will also offer an opportunity to revisit the rise of Mexican queer cinema since the 1990s and to analyze its defining characteristics. At a time marked by renewed attacks and censorship targeting LGBT people and queer themes in academic programs, books, and cinema worldwide, this conference seeks to highlight the creative originality of one of the most inventive, visible, and influential Mexican filmmakers and producers of his generation.
