Feeling, Thinking, Living the Archive: Affective and Collective Dimensions of the Sensitive

The archive as a concept has been the subject of many (re)readings in recent decades. The archival turn envisages the archive as a historical agent, shaped by logics of inclusion and exclusion that help to visibilise or silence certain events (Arondekar et al., 2015). Because of their potential to disturb the private order, emotions and affections have long been dismissed as archival sources (Losiggio and Macon, 2017). The recent affective turn allows for the questioning of the dictability of the archive and the rethinking of the social (Clough and Halley, 2007). At the intersection of ethics, politics and aesthetics, this colloquium advances an invitation to re-examine archival practices, forms of representation and strategies of access along four axes: Memory sensitivity; Sensitive information; The sensitive in art; and Gender sensitivities. It thus offers a trans-American and multilingual space for critical, artistic and interdisciplinary reflection, linking theory, archival practices, art and activism. The aim is to explore how the archive structures sensibilities and participates in processes of domination, marginalisation and resistance. The colloquium, which will be held at the IdIHCS (UNLP, Argentina), aims to restore the archive to its historicity and materiality, while questioning the systems of legitimisation of the knowledge it produces (Lewi, 2024).
